City of Peekskill Announces Retirement of Police Chief Leo Dylewski

The City of Peekskill announces the retirement of Police Chief Leo Dylewski, effective Friday, December 12, 2025, after more than 25 years of distinguished service in law enforcement in the City of Peekskill. The City extends its sincere appreciation to Chief Dylewski for strengthening the partnership between the Police Department and the community, and for his steadfast commitment to public safety.

Throughout his career, Chief Dylewski has been instrumental in advancing community-focused policing initiatives. Under his leadership, the department introduced the downtown walking patrol, established the Quality-of-Life Committee, and created a full-time Community Policing Unit. He also implemented a full-time walking post detail and enhanced vehicle and traffic enforcement to improve roadway safety throughout the city. As one of the City’s key leaders, Chief Dylewski helped guide and expand youth engagement and prevention efforts, including continuing important programs such as G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education and Training) and D.A.R.E., ensuring that Peekskill’s young people receive positive support and education.

Chief Dylewski’s tenure with the City of Peekskill reflects a steady path of dedication and professional growth. He proudly served 14 years in Patrol before being promoted to Sergeant in 2014, Lieutenant Watch Commander in 2017, Patrol Commander in 2020, and ultimately Chief of Police in 2021. As Chief, he oversaw the hiring of 24 new officers and championed efforts to diversify the force by recruiting local candidates from within the Peekskill community.

Mayor Vivian McKenzie expressed deep gratitude, stating: “Chief Dylewski has served the people of Peekskill with integrity, compassion, and unwavering dedication. His commitment to building trust, strengthening community relationships, and ensuring the safety of every resident has left an indelible mark on our city. We are truly grateful for his years of service and wish him the very best as he embarks on this next chapter.”

City Manager Matt Alexander also commended Chief Dylewski’s service, adding: “Chief Dylewski has been an exceptional partner in advancing the City’s mission to deliver effective, community-centered public safety. His leadership, professionalism, and forward-thinking approach have strengthened the department and improved the quality of life for all who live and work in Peekskill. We thank him for his commitment and wish him continued success in retirement.”
